Otsego County Jail Overview
Otsego County Jail is operated by the Otsego County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division. The official facility map and State Commission of Correction directory place the jail at 172 County Highway 33 West in Cooperstown, with the Corrections phone line at 607-547-4252. It is the only local detention facility found in the official Otsego County facility research. No county jail annex, separate work-release center, state prison, BOP institution, or dedicated ICE detention center was located inside the county.
The county Corrections page calls the jail a maximum-security county facility with conventional cells and dormitory-style beds. It says the facility houses people from local ordinance violators through serious felony offenders, and it describes cameras, remotely controlled doors, staff training, and an accreditation process through the New York State Sheriff's Association. For records and custody purposes, the jail population includes pretrial detainees, sentenced jail inmates, civil holds, technical parole violators, state-ready prisoners waiting for DOCCS transfer, and Otsego-responsible inmates housed elsewhere when capacity requires it.
Otsego County Jail Capacity
Official Otsego County sources give more than one capacity number, and the differences should not be flattened. The older Corrections page describes a 96-bed jail. The county jail-condition page says the public safety facility was originally designed for 104 inmates and that the State Commission of Correction reduced its maximum capacity to 40 in 2022. The May 2026 DCJS/SCOC monthly jail population report then shows a responsible census of 59, with 31 in house and 28 boarded out.
The capacity issue changes how an Otsego County Jail lookup works. A caller may learn that a person is under Otsego County responsibility but not physically housed in the Cooperstown jail building. That is why current custody confirmation should ask both whether the person is in custody and where the person is housed.
Look Up Otsego County Jail Custody
No official Otsego County Jail current-inmate web roster was located on the county or sheriff pages reviewed. The Corrections section includes a state inmate-search link, but that points to New York DOCCS and does not list most recent county jail detainees. For current Otsego County Jail custody, the researched access chain is the jail phone line, sheriff records request process, in-person sheriff office contact, VINELink for notifications, and separate state, federal, or immigration locators where the custody type calls for them.
- Call Otsego County Corrections at 607-547-4252 and ask for current custody status.
- Ask whether the person is in house at Otsego County Jail or boarded out to another county facility.
- Use the sheriff FOIL route for releasable booking records, jail records, or booking photos.
- Register with New York VINELink if the goal is release or transfer notification.
- Search DOCCS only for sentenced state-prison custody, not new county jail booking.
- Use BOP or ICE ODLS for federal or immigration custody.
Otsego County Jail Contact
The jail and sheriff office share the County Highway 33 West public safety location. The sheriff page lists office hours for the sheriff's public office, while the Corrections line is the key phone number for custody, bail, visitation processing, and questions about whether a person is housed locally or boarded out. Confirm the right counter and current procedure before traveling.

Visit Otsego County Jail
Otsego County Jail publishes weekend visiting periods and a detailed rule page. Effective February 1, 2026, visitors must arrive no later than 10 minutes before the scheduled visitation hour, with a five-minute grace period. Visitors arriving at or after five minutes before the hour are not permitted for that session. Each visitor must show proper ID each time, such as a New York driver's license, military or DMV ID, or another state-issued driver's license.
| Day | Officially listed periods | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday | 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.; 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.; 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. | Arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled hour. |
| Sunday | Official page lists 9:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m.; 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.; 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. | The morning entry appears inconsistent with Saturday; verify with the jail before travel. |
The visiting rules limit visits to one hour, cap visitors at two per visit, require orderly conduct, and restrict clothing such as hooded sweatshirts, pullovers, coats, half shirts, mini skirts, short shorts, and open shirts. General and close-custody inmates receive two one-hour open visits per week, while trustees receive three one-hour visits per week.
The visiting-hours screenshot is useful because the jail's arrival rule is strict and can determine whether a visitor is processed for that session.
Otsego County Jail Mail and Money
Otsego County Jail's correspondence page says incoming mail is removed from envelopes and checked for contraband, except privileged mail, which is opened and inspected in the inmate's presence. Stamps and labels are removed. Mail and packages must include the inmate's full name and address, and incoming items must include the sender's full name and address. Mail with no sender name or address is not given to the inmate and is placed in property until release.

Bail at Otsego County Jail
The official bail procedures page says cash bail may be posted at the facility and forwarded to the appropriate court. Credit-card bail is also listed, but the person with the card must complete paperwork at the facility and have access to a cell phone or pay phone. Western Union deposits to an inmate account require calling the facility for details. A payer may also use a bondsman of choice, and the county links an online bail payment route.
The court, not the jail, sets the legal release order and amount. If the court releases a person on recognizance or non-monetary conditions, there may be no cash bail to post. If the court remands the person, payment will not create release. Holds, warrants, parole matters, federal custody, or immigration detainers can also delay release after a local payment.
Otsego County Jail Conditions
The jail's condition history is unusually well documented by the county. The official condition page says assessments in 2015 and 2021 found end-of-life mechanical systems, infrastructure deficiencies, operational deficiencies, and safety deficiencies. It also says the jail has a linear, non-direct-supervision design and that later New York jails moved toward direct-supervision pod housing. The current facility's timeline appears in several official forms: constructed around 1990, built in 1991, and occupied in 1992, depending on the county page consulted.
The county page states that the sheriff has advocated for upgrades for years and that the future of the jail is a County Board decision. For families and researchers, the practical effect is immediate: capacity pressure can lead to boarding out, and the jail should be called before visits, bail travel, or records requests that depend on a person's physical location.
Note: Confirm custody, housing location, visiting hours, and arrival rules with Corrections before traveling to Otsego County Jail.
